Experience Patagonia with South American Luxe

Patagonia is a land of vast glaciers, granite spires, turquoise lakes and open skies, shared between Chile and Argentina at the southern tip of the continent.

Condors circle above the Andes, guanacos graze on the windswept steppe and great walls of ice break into milky blue lakes. It is one of the most spectacular regions on Earth, and one that rewards careful planning.

Our Patagonia holidays begin with a conversation. We learn what you would most love to see, the kind of hotel that makes you feel at home, how active you would like to be and the pace that suits you. Then our specialists design a private journey around those answers, with every transfer, excursion and night's stay arranged for you.

Seasons in the southern hemisphere

Best Time to Visit Patagonia

Patagonia can be visited all year, but the main touring season runs from October to April. Weather changes quickly at any time of year, and wind is part of the experience, so we build flexibility into every itinerary.

September – November

Spring

Conditions

Lengthening days, fresh green steppe and early wildflowers. Temperatures are cool and it can be very windy, with late snow possible in September.

Excursions & availability

Lodges and boat excursions reopen through September and October, and almost everything operates by November. Fewer visitors and good value. Magellanic penguin colonies in southern Chile typically become active from around October.

December – February

Summer

Conditions

The mildest temperatures and very long days, with up to around 17 hours of daylight in the far south. Strong winds are common, particularly in the afternoon.

Excursions & availability

All excursions run, including glacier boat trips and full-day hikes. This is peak season, so the best hotels fill early and rates are at their highest. Book well ahead.

March – May

Autumn

Conditions

Lenga and ñire beech forests turn red and gold, usually at their best around April. Winds are often calmer, though days are shorter and nights colder.

Excursions & availability

Services run fully in March, then gradually reduce through April and May as some lodges and boat departures close for winter. A peaceful, photogenic time to travel.

June – August

Winter

Conditions

Snow-covered landscapes, short days and cold temperatures, with crisp, clear spells and very few visitors.

Excursions & availability

Many lodges in Torres del Paine and El Chaltén close, and some trails and boat trips are restricted. Perito Moreno Glacier can be visited all year, and Ushuaia offers winter activities including skiing.
